ABOUT

Borislav Petrov has been a professional drummer for over 30 years. He performs and records music in a variety of styles – from pop and rock music, to traditional and contemporary jazz, latin jazz, ethno-jazz, big band, fusion, world music, electronica, etc. Both as a performer and a composer, the main focus of his own musical searches are the rhythms and melodies of Bulgarian folk music and its contemporary forms, and the music of the Roma people in the Balkans. He looks for various ways to absorb and integrate some of this information into his own composed music and performing style, attempting to create a homogeneous stylistic amalgam of multidirectional influences.

Some of the results from these endeavours can be observed in the music Borislav writes and performs in various projects – his own (Jazzanitza, Asymmetronica), as well as in collaboration with important instrumentalists of the contemporary Bulgarian music scene, such as Dimitar Liolev, Zhivko Vasilev, Antony Donchev, Dimitar Bodurov, Vladimir Karparov and more.

Borislav also delved into the more experimental European jazz scene by being a co-founder of the internationally acclaimed Dutch multimedia jazz trio Tin Men & The Telephone. He was a member of the group for over 10 years, contributing to 3 of their studio albums.

Borislav’s discography includes over 30 albums of various artists from Bulgaria, The Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Israel, USA, UK, Romania.

Along with his concert activity, Borislav Petrov is also involved in music education, primarily through giving lectures and leading international master classes, workshops and seminars on various topics. He is the creator, producer and host of Jazztory – jazz educational concert series, devoted to presenting the life and music of legendary figures in the history of jazz music to Bulgarian audiences.

As an ethnomusicologist, Borislav Petrov investigates and analyzes the drumming styles related to folk music from Bulgaria and the music, created and performed by Bulgarian gypsies.
