JAZZANITZA

About:
Jazzanitza translates asymmetric rhythms – a distinctive feature of Bulgarian folklore – into the language of contemporary jazz, following the well-trodden paths in the musical heritage of folk improvisers such as Ivo Papazov, Petar Ralchev, Teodosii Spasov.
Jazzanitza is a long-term author’s project of the drummer and composer Borislav Petrov. Well known Bulgarian musicians such as Antoni Donchev, Vladimir Karparov, Dimitar Liolev, Lyudmil Krumov have been a part of it. The current lineup of the band includes the “young lions” of ethno-jazz Zhivko Vassilev and Borislav Iliev.
In 2016, having already returned to Bulgaria, Borislav Petrov recorded the first and self-titled album “Jazzanitza”. The musicians Dimitar Loolev, Vladimir Karparov, Lyudmil Krumov, Lyubomir Tsanev and Boris Taslev took part in it. In the same year, the group took part in the “Apolonia Arts Festival” (Sozopol), “A to JazZ Festival” (Sofia), “Dixie Jazz Fest” (V.Tarnovo) and others. The concert tour included the famous Bulgarian pianist, composer and conductor Antoni Donchev.
In 2017, the composition “Straight as a Highway” was selected by the jazz-fusion ensemble at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA) for its graduation concert.
Jazzanitza’s second release is a live album and was recorded in Bucharest, Romania. “Live at ARCUB” presents the music from “Jazzanitza 2016” in a smaller formation (quartet of guitar, saxophone, bass and drums), which gives the compositions a completely new atmosphere of sound.
